Wired for connection

We are wired for connection.

It’s one of our most fundamental human needs.

Facebook promised to satisfy it: suddenly we could connect with anyone, anywhere, instantly. But somewhere along the way, quantity replaced quality. We accumulated hundreds of “friends” and felt lonelier than ever.

Then came TikTok. It took things further.

Suddenly we didn’t even need to connect with people we knew. A stranger’s 15-second video could give us a hit of dopamine. We’re endlessly scrolling, endlessly consuming, endlessly seeking.

But here’s the problem: these connections are so hollow they can never truly satisfy. So we need more. And more. And more.

We’ve become hooked on a poor imitation of what we actually crave.

True connection, the kind that nourishes us, is deep, present, and unhurried. It happens over a long meal with no phones on the table. On a walk with a friend. In a conversation where someone is genuinely listening.

That’s what we’ve traded away. And that’s exactly what we need to reclaim.
